A detailed 7-day Hunza Valley itinerary covering Karimabad, Baltit Fort, Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, Khunjerab Pass, and the best day hikes — perfect for first-time visitors.

Seven days in Hunza Valley is enough time to experience the highlights of the region without feeling rushed — but only if you plan wisely. This itinerary is designed for first-time visitors who want to see the best of Hunza, from Karimabad’s forts and orchards to the glaciers and passes of Upper Hunza. It is suitable for travellers of moderate fitness and can be done at any time from April to October.
Arrive in Karimabad by flight via Gilgit or by road from Islamabad. If flying, arrange a shared wagon or private car from Gilgit Airport (100km, about 2 hours). Check into your guesthouse and take the afternoon to walk the main bazaar, buy fresh dried apricots and local snacks, and watch the light change on Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar as the sun descends. Dinner at one of the guesthouses in town — try local chapshuro (a Hunza meat pastry) and apricot soup if available.
Begin the morning with a visit to Baltit Fort, arriving early to beat tour groups and enjoy the best light on the mountains behind. The guided tour takes about 1.5 hours and covers the royal chambers, armouries, and watchtower with its extraordinary views. After lunch, drive or walk 4km down to Altit village and visit Altit Fort and the Altit Heritage Village. The women’s craft cooperative here sells exceptional hand-embroidered items at fair prices. Return to Karimabad in the late afternoon. Consider an evening walk through the apricot orchards above the town as the sun sets.
Wake before dawn for the drive up to Duikar (Eagle’s Nest) for sunrise. The panoramic view of the Hunza Valley and the surrounding Karakoram peaks at first light is one of the finest experiences in northern Pakistan. Arrange your jeep the evening before and leave Karimabad no later than 4:30am. Return for a late breakfast, then take the rest of the morning for the hike toward Ultar Glacier Base Camp — a demanding 4 to 5 hour return hike that climbs steeply through pine forest and meadows to a dramatic viewpoint beneath the Ultar massif.
Drive north along the Karakoram Highway toward Upper Hunza. Stop at Attabad Lake for a boat ride on the turquoise water — one of the most visually striking landscapes in the Karakoram. Continue through Gulmit (consider a quick stop at the Heritage Museum) and drive to Passu village. The Passu Cones, visible from the village and road, are among the most photographed geological formations in Pakistan. Cross the old Hussaini Suspension Bridge in the afternoon for the experience and the view. Overnight in Passu.
Hire a jeep from Passu for the full-day round trip to Khunjerab Pass (4,693m) — the world’s highest paved international border crossing and one of the most dramatic drives in the world. Pass through Sost for breakfast and fuel. Spend time at the pass itself — the high-altitude plateau, the Pakistan-China border monument, and the extraordinary emptiness of the landscape at nearly 5,000m are unforgettable. Keep an eye out for Marco Polo sheep in the broad meadows approaching the pass. Return to Passu by late afternoon.
Spend the morning on the Passu Glacier walk — a 4 to 5 hour return hike from the village that crosses a stream and traverses moraine to reach the glacier’s edge. Take a local guide for this walk as the stream crossing can be tricky in high meltwater months. Visit Borit Lake on the way back for a reflection photograph of the Passu Cones. Drive back to Karimabad in the afternoon and enjoy a final evening in the bazaar.
Drive to Gilgit for your onward flight to Islamabad, or begin the return road journey along the Karakoram Highway. The drive from Karimabad to Gilgit takes approximately 2 hours. Gilgit has a small airport with several flights to Islamabad per week — book well in advance and remember to build buffer time for potential weather cancellations. Alternatively, continue south by road for the full KKH experience back to Islamabad.
Arriving in April for blossom season or September for clear skies and fewer crowds will enhance every day of this itinerary. Book accommodation in Karimabad months in advance for April. Hire a single driver for your entire stay — having a reliable local driver who knows the roads and can make recommendations significantly improves the experience. Heritage Hike can build a fully tailored version of this itinerary with accommodation, transport, guided excursions, and cultural experiences fully arranged — get in touch to start planning your Hunza journey.
