Getting There: Flights from Germany to Islamabad
There are no direct flights from Germany to Islamabad. All routes involve one stopover, making total travel time 10–14 hours. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul offers excellent connections from Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, and Berlin. Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, and Etihad via Abu Dhabi are all strong alternatives. Return economy fares from Germany range from €450–€650 in low season and €650–€950 in peak season. Book 6–8 weeks ahead, or 10–12 weeks for cherry blossom season (late March–April) and summer trekking.
The Pakistan E-Visa: What German Travelers Need to Know in 2026
German citizens are eligible for the Pakistan tourist e-visa through the Pakistan Online Visa System (POVS) at visa.nadra.gov.pk. Important 2026 update: Pakistan's free Visa Prior to Arrival (VPA) program was suspended on January 1, 2026. German travelers must now apply for a standard paid e-visa — this is the only available route for tourist entry as of June 2026.
Required Documents
You will need: a valid German passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your travel dates; a recent passport-size photograph with white background; return flight ticket or onward itinerary; hotel bookings or accommodation confirmation; a Letter of Invitation (LOI) from a registered Pakistani tour operator — Heritage Hike provides this for all clients; a bank statement or proof of sufficient funds; and travel insurance documentation. Processing time is 5–10 working days. Apply at least 3 weeks before departure.
What Is the Letter of Invitation (LOI)?
The LOI is a document issued by a registered Pakistani tour operator confirming that they are hosting you, know your itinerary, and serve as your local point of contact. It is a required part of the tourist visa application. When you book with Heritage Hike, we prepare and send you the LOI — you do not need to source this yourself.
From Islamabad to the North: Domestic Connections
Once you land at Islamabad International Airport, domestic flights take you to Gilgit (50–60 minutes) or Skardu (35 minutes). Both are among the most scenic flights in the world — your plane threads through the Karakoram peaks at close range. Book morning flights only; afternoon services are frequently cancelled due to mountain wind conditions. Alternatively, the Karakoram Highway road journey from Islamabad to Gilgit takes 14–18 hours and is itself a legendary travel experience.
Practical Tips for German Travelers
Currency: Pakistani Rupee (PKR). Withdraw cash in Islamabad — ATMs are scarce in remote valleys. Euros can be exchanged at money changers in Islamabad and Gilgit. SIM card: purchase a SCOM SIM in Gilgit for data coverage across Gilgit-Baltistan; your German SIM will not work in most northern areas. Language: English is spoken in tourist-facing businesses throughout Hunza and Skardu. Altitude: Karimabad sits at 2,400m, Skardu at 2,438m, Deosai National Park at 4,114m — acclimatise gradually and never rush ascent.
