Altit Fort
Older than Baltit and less visited, Altit Fort sits dramatically above the Hunza River gorge — Pakistan's oldest standing fort and a gateway to the ancient village beneath it.
Destination Overview
Altit Fort is believed to be over 900 years old, making it the oldest standing fort in Gilgit-Baltistan and among the oldest in Pakistan. While it sits in the shadow of the more famous Baltit Fort, many visitors find Altit more intimate, atmospheric, and authentic.
Perched on a cliff edge about 5 km south of Karimabad, the fort towers above the Hunza River gorge. Its oldest section, the watchtower, projects out over a sheer drop to the river hundreds of metres below, offering a vertiginous and unforgettable view of the valley.
Like Baltit, Altit was carefully restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC). The conservation work extended into the adjacent Altit old village, where families still live in traditional stone-and-wood houses connected by narrow, winding lanes. This living heritage environment makes a visit to Altit as much about the village as the fort itself.
Together, Baltit and Altit Forts represent the two poles of Hunza’s royal heritage. Visiting both in a single day gives a rounded picture of the valley’s political, cultural, and architectural history that neither site can provide alone.

Combine Altit and Baltit Forts in a single morning or afternoon; they are only about 5 km apart.
Do not miss the tower viewpoint over the Hunza River gorge, one of the most dramatic vantage points in the valley.
Wear sturdy shoes, as the fort interiors and village lanes have uneven stone floors and steps.
