Gulmit
The cultural capital of Gojal in Upper Hunza, Gulmit is a welcoming village known for its Wakhi heritage museum, Ghulkin Glacier, sweeping valley views, and position near Attabad Lake.
Destination Overview
Introduction
Gulmit is the administrative headquarters of the Gojal sub-district and the largest village in Upper Hunza, situated on the Karakoram Highway roughly halfway between Attabad Lake and Passu. Though it lacks the dramatic fort architecture of Karimabad or the stark glacier scenery of Passu, Gulmit has a quiet charm of its own: wide, tree-lined paths, traditional flat-roofed stone houses, terraced fields, and a community that takes particular pride in the preservation of its Wakhi cultural heritage. It is also one of the most convenient bases for day trips to the surrounding attractions of Upper Hunza.
Gulmit Heritage Museum
The Gulmit Heritage Museum is a small but carefully curated collection of artefacts documenting the traditional life and material culture of the Wakhi people of Gojal. Exhibits include traditional clothing, tools, musical instruments, agricultural implements, and items used in the long-standing practice of high-altitude yak herding. The museum provides an accessible and informative introduction to the cultural distinctiveness of Gojal relative to lower Hunza, where the Burusho people and Burushaski language predominate.
Ghulkin Glacier
A well-trodden footpath from Gulmit leads to the Ghulkin Glacier, a relatively accessible glacier whose lower reaches can be reached in about two hours of walking from the village. The glacier descends from the Batura Muztagh range and its snout sits at a relatively low elevation, making it one of the few glaciers in the Karakoram that can be visited without specialist equipment or high-altitude experience. The approach passes through a dramatic moraine landscape with views of the ice towers and seracs above.
Chipursan Valley — The Gateway to the Wakhan
North of Gulmit, a side road branches off the KKH toward the Chipursan Valley, a remote and largely unexplored corridor that runs toward the Afghan Wakhan Corridor border. The valley is home to a series of small Wakhi villages and offers some of the most adventurous trekking in the Karakoram, with routes crossing passes into the upper Wakhan and providing access to an extraordinary landscape of broad river plains, glaciers, and 7,000-metre peaks. Currently accessible only by jeep and on foot, Chipursan is for serious adventure travellers.
Upper Hunza Valley Views
From the upper terraces and meadows above Gulmit, the views across the Upper Hunza Valley are expansive and spectacular. The broad, U-shaped glacial valley stretches in both directions, framed by the Batura and Passu groups of peaks to the north and the shimmering surface of Attabad Lake visible in the distance to the south. The setting of the village itself — on a wide, gently sloping terrace above the river — gives it a sense of space and openness that is distinct from the more dramatically perched villages of the lower valley.
Why Stay in Gulmit?
Gulmit is one of the best-positioned bases in Upper Hunza. Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, Hussaini Bridge, Batura Glacier, and Ghulkin Glacier are all within easy reach for day excursions. The village has a small but growing range of guesthouses, and the community is welcoming to travellers. For those who want to explore Upper Hunza at a relaxed pace without the noise of the KKH highway traffic that passes through Passu, Gulmit offers a quieter and more intimate alternative.

Winter (November to March) is cold with limited services.
How to Reach
Gulmit lies on the Karakoram Highway approximately 160km north of Gilgit and about 25km north of the western end of Attabad Lake. From Karimabad, the drive takes about 45 minutes. Shared vans and wagons running between Gilgit and Sost along the KKH pass through Gulmit; ask to be dropped at the Gulmit village turn-off.

Essential Information
Weather & Climate
Gulmit has a similar climate to Passu — warm, dry summers with daytime temperatures of 22–28°C and cool nights. The valley receives very little rainfall, sitting deep in the Karakoram rain shadow. Winters are cold and snowy from November to March, with limited services and some guesthouses closing.
Accommodation
Gulmit has a modest selection of guesthouses offering clean, basic rooms, most of which include meals. The Village Guest House is one of the longest-established options. Book ahead in peak summer months. Options are more limited than Karimabad but sufficient for a comfortable stay.
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is available in the village along the KKH. There is a small bazaar with basic supplies, but stock up on any specialist food or equipment in Karimabad before heading to Gulmit. ATM access is unreliable; carry sufficient cash from Karimabad or Gilgit.
