Naltar Valley
A hidden valley of dense pine forests, rainbow-hued glacial lakes, and Pakistan's highest ski resort — Naltar is Gilgit's most underrated gem.
Destination Overview
Naltar Valley sits about 40 km north of Gilgit, climbing from the valley floor through dense stands of pine and juniper into a high alpine world of glacial lakes and open meadows. It remains one of the least-crowded genuinely spectacular destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan — most visitors to the north pass it by in favour of Hunza, which makes Naltar feel almost privately yours.
The valley’s signature attraction is its trio of glacial lakes — known collectively as the Naltar Lakes — whose waters shift between vivid turquoise, emerald, and deep blue depending on the season and the angle of light. The upper lake sits at around 3,700 metres and involves a 4–5 hour return hike from Naltar village, passing through pine forest and open alpine terrain.
In winter, Naltar hosts Pakistan’s premier ski resort — the highest in the country — where the Pakistan Air Force operates slopes that are also used to train the national ski team. In summer and autumn, the valley draws hikers, photographers, and those simply seeking quiet, with wildflower meadows in July–August and golden forest light in October.

By Road
From Gilgit, take Naltar Road north out of the city. The initial stretch is paved, turning unpaved beyond Nomal village. A 4x4 jeep is required from Nomal onwards due to rough, narrow sections. The journey from Gilgit to Naltar village typically takes 1.5–2 hours.
Private jeep hire from Gilgit to Naltar generally costs around PKR 4,000–7,000 return, including waiting time.
By Public Transport
Budget travellers can use shared jeeps that depart from the Naltar Road stand in Gilgit in the morning and return in the afternoon. Timings are limited and less flexible, so confirm departure and return times in advance.

Essential Information
Facilities & Accommodation
Naltar village offers basic guesthouses and a small Pakistan Air Force rest house that usually needs to be booked in advance. Facilities are simple, with limited dining options and no high-end hotels. For those heading to the upper valley and lakes, camping is often the best option, as there are no formal lodges near the lakes.
Money & Connectivity
There are no ATMs in Naltar Valley, so bring sufficient cash from Gilgit for transport, food, and accommodation. Mobile signal is generally available in the lower valley and village, but it disappears towards the upper valley and lakes, so do not rely on mobile data or calls once you leave the main settlement.
Camping & Permissions
Camping is permitted and popular among trekkers around the upper valley and near the lakes. While formal permits are not required, it is recommended to inform local authorities or village elders if you plan to camp overnight, both for safety and courtesy. Practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out all rubbish.
Weather & Safety
Weather in Naltar can change quickly, especially near the lakes and higher slopes. Even in summer, temperatures can drop sharply at night, so bring warm layers, a good sleeping bag if camping, and rain protection. In winter, deep snow and icy roads require proper gear and experienced drivers. Wildlife, including snow leopards, is present but rarely seen; avoid leaving food scraps around camps.
Travel Tips
Use 4x4 jeeps from Gilgit or Nomal; the road beyond Naltar village is rough and unpaved.
Start the hike to the upper Naltar Lakes early in the morning for calmer weather and better light for photography.
Carry warm layers and a waterproof jacket even in summer, as temperatures can drop quickly at altitude.
Expect simple guesthouses in Naltar village; for the upper valley and lakes, bring camping gear.
Permits are generally not required, but inform local authorities or locals if you plan to camp overnight.
Bring enough cash from Gilgit; there are no ATMs or reliable card facilities in the valley.
Pack snacks and drinking water or a filter, as shops become scarce beyond the village.
