Shimshal Valley
One of Pakistan's most remote inhabited valleys, Shimshal in Upper Hunza offers vast high-altitude pastures, challenging treks, yak herding culture, and total wilderness solitude.
Destination Overview
Introduction
Shimshal Valley is one of the most remote permanently inhabited valleys in Pakistan, tucked deep in the Gojal sub-district of Upper Hunza behind a series of gorges and high passes that kept it effectively isolated from the outside world until a road was completed in 2003. The valley sits at around 3,100 metres at village level, but its high summer pastures — known as the Shimshal Pamir — extend to over 4,700 metres, making it one of the highest year-round herding grounds on Earth. For those willing to make the demanding journey, Shimshal offers an encounter with mountain life and landscape that is genuinely unlike anything else in Pakistan.
The Road to Shimshal
The journey to Shimshal village from the Karakoram Highway at Passu involves approximately 55km of rough jeep track that winds through an extraordinary sequence of gorges, river crossings, and cliff-edge switchbacks. The road was built largely by the villagers themselves over many years, using minimal machinery and enormous collective effort, as an act of determination to connect their community with the wider world. Even today, the track demands a capable 4x4 vehicle and an experienced driver. The two-to-three-hour drive is itself one of the most dramatic road journeys in Pakistan.
Shimshal Pamir — The High Pastures
Each summer, the women and children of Shimshal village undertake the traditional migration to the Shimshal Pamir, driving herds of yaks, sheep, and goats up to the high pastures where they spend several months tending the animals in the most demanding conditions imaginable. This practice, known locally as mal, has been the foundation of the community's survival for generations. The Pamir plateau itself, at around 4,700 metres, is a sweeping grassland ringed by glaciers and surrounded by peaks approaching 7,000 metres — a landscape of terrifying beauty.
Trekking & Mountaineering
Shimshal is a base for several serious trekking and mountaineering routes. The trek to the Shimshal Pamir and Shimshal Pass (4,735m) is a multi-day adventure through high glacial terrain. The Yazghil Glacier trek offers a more technically demanding route through an active glacial environment. Minglik Sar (6,050m), a peak accessible from the valley, has attracted small mountaineering expeditions. All routes beyond the village require a registered guide, appropriate permits, and full expedition equipment.
The Shimshali Community
The people of Shimshal are Wakhis — a distinct ethnic group related to communities across the border in Tajikistan and Afghanistan — and speak the Wakhi language, which is separate from the Burushaski spoken in most of Hunza. The community is renowned in Pakistan's mountaineering world for producing exceptionally skilled high-altitude porters and guides, many of whom have summited multiple 8,000-metre peaks. The village has its own school, a small health facility, and a community guesthouse, all established through collective effort and outside support from organisations like the Aga Khan Development Network.
Why Shimshal?
Shimshal is not a destination that reveals itself easily. It demands effort, flexibility, and a willingness to accept discomfort in exchange for something extraordinary — the rare experience of a living, breathing mountain community that has maintained its way of life against every conceivable obstacle. Few places in Pakistan leave a deeper impression on those who visit, and fewer still offer such an unmediated encounter with the sheer scale and indifference of the high Karakoram.

Best Time to Visit
June to September is the best window for visiting. July and August offer the most stable conditions for trekking to the Pamir. The road to Shimshal can be blocked by rockfall or snow at any time, so build flexibility into your itinerary. Spring (May) is beautiful but roads can be unreliable. Avoid October to April when conditions are severe and access is often impossible.
